Inside the organising: stories from the union frontline
11:45am Sun 20 AprAbout this session
Though the union movement in Australia is generally at a low ebb, old-fashioned union organising still works – and can lead to serious strikes in key industries.
This session will feature Dave, a worker who was part of the epic Woolworths strike in November and December last year. Dave is a union delegate and health and safety rep at one of the distribution centres where workers went on strike for 17 days, paralysing Woolworths' operations in a dramatic display of workers' power.
We’ll also hear from Danica Cheesley, a professional staff member and National Tertiary Education Union delegate at Melbourne Uni. Danica will explain the organising behind the two one-week strikes at Melbourne Uni in 2023 – the first ever one-week strikes by academic and professional staff at a university in this country.
