Luxemburg: a libertarian alternative to Lenin?

11:45am Sat 19 Apr

About this session

The question of party organisation has been a central concern of Marxists for more than a century. This book club on "Marxism and the Party" by the British Marxist John Molyenux will explore the relationship between the revolutionary party and the working class, and the contributions made by Marxists to this question. We strongly encourage attendees to not only read the book but attend other sessions in the series.

In "Marxism and the Party" Molyneux discusses Rosa Luxemburg, the Polish revolutionary who is often presented as having a more democratic and libertarian approach to party building when compared to Marxists like Lenin and Trotsky. Molyneux argues that while it is true that Luxemburg was critical of various aspects of the Bolsheviks, she shared with them an understanding of the importance of building a revolutionary party to smash capitalism.
