Guerillaism and Trotskyism in the 1960s
2:15pm Sun 20 Aprmelbourne
About this session
Trotskyism and the struggle of guerilla fighters are not usually associated with each other. For decades, Trotskyists argued that the road to socialism lay in the power of the working class to overthrow capitalism through mass struggles in the workplace. However, in the aftermath of the Cuban revolution, sections of the Trotskyist movement within the 4th International argued that revolutionaries should embrace the armed struggle, particularly in South America. In Argentina, the Trotskyists formed the People's Revolutionary Army, which launched an armed struggle campaign against the government with disastrous results. This led to an important debate within the Trotskyist movement about the role of armed struggle in the fight for socialism.
