Australia's own coup: The Whitlam Dismissal

2:15pm Sat 19 Apr
melbourne

About this session

The election of the Whitlam government in December 1972 was a watershed in Australian political history. His government was the most reforming of any Australian Labor administration and the last one to introduce significant improvements to working-class life. But Whitlam also had to serve the interests of Australian capitalists. The rise and fall of his government exposed how disposable democracy is to the ruling class and the limits of parliamentary reform. Come along to this session to discuss Australia's own coup: the Whitlam dismissal.
