Dr Gary Foley on the Black Power movement
2:15pm Fri 18 Aprmelbourne
About this session
The Black Power movement of the 60s and 70s marked a radical leap forward in the anti-racist struggle in Australia. Inspired by the movement in the US, Aboriginal activists took up militant tactics to place radical demands against the inherently racist nature of Australian society and institutions. They directly confronted racism with protest, including setting up the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in 1972. This session will be an incredible firsthand account of the movement and draw out the key lessons for activists today.
